Day 64: Exploring Great Harbour Cay

Outside Great Harbour Cay to Bay of Five Pirates, Berry Islands chain, (anchored)

March 19, 2022

(9 weeks)

Trying to catch dinner.  Luckily we got pizza!

The forecast calls for the winds to pick up (again).  Whenever these fronts come in the winds will eventually rotate clockwise.  The anchorage we were in is protected from winds from the west but wide open to winds from the east (and north and south).  We made the decision to move to a more protected anchorage inside the Bay of Five Pirates.  This anchorage is really close to where we were and very near a large marina.  An added attraction is the best name ever!

The entry to the bay is pretty cool: it’s through an almost hidden channel with a rock face on both sides.

The boating community is friendly – folks from two other anchored boats came by and gave us info about where to dock our dinghy in the marina.  We also learned that we can order pizza on Saturday nights here…and for a nominal fee, we can use the marina showers, bikes, and (pay) laundry room.

We set out to explore Bullocks Harbour which is attached to Great Harbour by a very narrow isthmus.  The breeze here is great and appreciated on the five mile round trip. The holywood trees are pretty cool – the flowers are small but visited by butterflies.

Around the time we were getting hot and hungry we found CoolieMae’s restaurant.  It looks out over the harbor and the cracked conch was perfect (it’s kind of like popcorn chicken made with tenderized conch).

We also stopped at what is possibly called Breakaway’s on our way back (signage isn’t always clear here) to grab a quick drink.  There are two Bahamian breweries – Kalik and Sands – and no microbreweries on the islands we have explored.

After a nice dinghy ride, we returned to the marina to get our pizza.  While we waited we got to talk to even more boaters including a couple from Charleston and another couple who were in Bimini Sands Cove with us a few days ago.

We’re going to hang here for a few days.  It’s supposed to rain tomorrow which will rinse more salt off Lailia.  We both also want to check out the beach on the other side – we heard it’s really deep, empty, and beautiful.
